The Rise and Challenges of Albanian Immigration in Greece

A Historical Perspective

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Greece witnessed a surge in immigration from neighboring Albania. While Greece does not record ethnicity on censuses, Albanians form the largest non-Greek ethnic community and have had a significant impact on the country.

Contemporary Dynamics

As of 2013, Albanians constituted the largest immigrant group in Greece, with an estimated 480,000 individuals. Their presence has contributed to Greece's economic and social landscape, as well as facing challenges related to integration and assimilation. Many Albanians who lived in Greece have subsequently emigrated to Northern Europe, further shaping the migratory patterns within Europe.

Despite their sizeable presence, Albanians in Greece continue to face various challenges, including discrimination, limited access to healthcare and education, and the complexities of living in a foreign country with different cultural norms and expectations.
